AI in Education: How Basi Primary Teachers Moved to an AI-Powered Classroom | Somo Tech Literacy Centre (STLC)
Somo Tech Literacy Centre (STLC), formerly SomoTech Africa. How the Somiqo Hub team trained Basi Primary School teachers in Kilifi to use AI for CBC...
AI in education is no longer a distant idea for rural Kenyan schools. At Basi Primary School in Kilifi, the Somiqo Hub HQ team spent a full day with teachers, turning curiosity about artificial intelligence into practical classroom skills.
Why teacher AI training matters
Teachers carry a heavy planning load. Schemes of Work and lesson plans aligned to the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) take hours to prepare by hand. When teachers learn to use AI tools well, that time can go back to the learners in front of them.
What teachers practised
Working with the Amal Labs platform, teachers logged in on laptops and used the classroom smart board to explore how AI supports everyday teaching. Together we focused on four outcomes:
1. Personalising learning for every learner.
2. Generating Schemes of Work in minutes, not hours.
3. Creating AI-powered lesson plans aligned to CBC.
4. Making classroom delivery more interactive and effective.
Asking better questions
A key lesson was how to write specific, contextual prompts. A trainer showed a Grade 6 English Scheme of Work built with AI, then teachers built their own with a Somiqo Hub mentor beside them. The better the question, the more useful the answer for a real Kenyan classroom.
What comes next
Basi Primary is part of our wider teacher AI training programme in Kilifi County, run from Somiqo Hub. We are working towards training 5,200 teachers, so that every learner benefits from a teacher who is confident with technology.
