Teacher AI Training in Kilifi: Building Confidence Before Building Tools | Somo Tech Literacy Centre (STLC)
Somo Tech Literacy Centre (STLC), formerly SomoTech Africa. Our teacher AI training in Kilifi starts with a baseline: what teachers already know about AI,...
Every good teacher AI training programme starts by listening. Before we introduce tools, the Somo Tech Literacy Centre team meets Kilifi teachers to understand what they already know about artificial intelligence and what worries them about it.
Starting with a baseline
In our teacher AI baseline sessions, teachers tried AI on tablets and watched live demonstrations in a real classroom setting. We asked simple questions: Have you used AI before? What takes most of your planning time? Which subjects would benefit most?
What we learned
Many teachers are curious but have had few chances to try AI tools with support. Concerns often focus on accuracy, cost and whether AI replaces the teacher. Our answer is clear: AI is an assistant. The teacher stays in charge of learning.
How the training is designed
Our approach to AI in education for teachers is practical and local:
1. Hands-on practice on devices, not lectures.
2. Examples drawn from CBC subjects and Kenyan classrooms.
3. Prompt writing skills so answers fit the learner and the lesson.
4. Follow-up support from Somiqo Hub in Kilifi.
Our goal
We are working towards training 5,200 teachers. Progress is updated live on our Impact page as each training is recorded.
Schools and education partners who want to join the programme can contact us or visit Somiqo Hub.
